The Shiloh Shepherd is a recreated dog, and owes his existence to the efforts of an American, Tina Barber. Tina had German Shepherds as a child in Germany and believed that the modern German Shepherd had strayed too far from its roots in appearance and temperament. She has spent over 30 years breeding back to the original German Shepherd type.

These new dogs are now known as Shiloh Shepherds.

Shilohs can be good at herding and search and rescue as well as protection, but they possess a much softer temperament and are not recommended for aggression work.

Larger than the German Shepherd, the Shiloh Shepherd stands at least 26 inches (66 cm) or more at the shoulder, and weighs as much as 140 pounds (63 kg).

He has two coat types. The Smooth coat variety possesses a straight, medium-length, harsh double coat. The Plush variety has the same type of coat but he also has a distinctive mane around his neck and chest and feathering on the ears and back of his front legs. Coats may come in shades of black with tan, golden tan, reddish tan, silver, and cream as well as golden, silver, red, dark brown, dark gray, or black sables. Solid black or solid white coats are also seen.

The Shiloh Shepherd has been bred to have a medium to medium-soft temperament, being calm and friendly, great with kids, and yet can be an excellent protection dog. Courageous and self confident, this gentle giant possesses superior intelligence wrapped in a heart of gold, faithfully protecting his home and those he loves.

With the renowned shepherd versatility, the Shiloh is an easily trained companion who loves to swim, carry packs for the mountain climber, endure long trail rides, or pull heavy sleds. His excellent nose can be utilized in various ways.

As a true, loyal flock guardian descendant, he is steady and bold without undue aggression, ready to die fighting for those in his care, yet sweet and loving when playing with small children, animals, or comforting the elderly.

With the great stamina of his farm dog ancestors, he is capable of trotting all day long. He requires a fenced yard and lots of exercise including a daily walk.
