South African Boerboel
But of thee it shall be said, this dog watched beside a bed, day and night unweary… – Elizabeth Barrett Browning
An extremely rare dog in Canada, the Boerboel is the South African descendant of the Mastiff, Bullmastiff, and other bulldog types. He dates his beginnings to 1652 when a “bullenbijter” dog was brought to South Africa by Jan van Riebeeck, an early Dutch settler seeking to protect himself and his family against the dangers to be found in an unfamiliar country.
In 1820 British settlers brought in Mastiffs to protect their farms, and in 1938 the de Beers organization imported Bullmastiffs to guard their diamond mines.
These breeds were bred to large native African dogs and resulted in the Boerboel as he is today. Originally bred for protection, ‘Boerboel’ roughly translates into English as ‘Farmers Lot’ and reflects the Boerboel’s heritage as a guardian of the farm.
As befits his history, he has a special affinity for farm animals and makes a wonderful flock guardian. When not working or at play, he will happily lie quietly with the family.

An impressively balanced dog, the adult Boerbel stands up to 27 1/2 inches (69.85) at the shoulder and has a self-assured and imposing demeanor. Grooming is minimal as the coat is short, smooth, and dense. The Boerboel’s coat comes in yellow, tawny, reddish-brown, brown, piebald, and all shades of brindle. His muzzle is black. His tail may or may not be docked.
The Boerboel is a calm, well balanced dog with an even temperament who is nevertheless a natural guard dog and completely fearless on the job. He bonds with all members of the family and sees them as his special charges to be protected against all threats. Accordingly, he is wary of strangers until he has been introduced properly. He is highly attuned to his owners’ state of mind and is able to sense fear. The Boerboel is a loving and affectionate family dog and is a guardian and playmate for children. A Boerboel will spend hours watching over an infant. He has a duty to protect and takes it seriously.
A large and powerful dog, he needs an owner who is strong, confident, and patient, and he should be put in obedience training and socialized early on. Loyal and intelligent, he does best with consistent, and firm but gentle training.
Due to his size, the Boeroel is most comfortable living in a larger home with a good amount of fenced property attached. He has considerable stamina and is very agile for his size. He needs regular exercise to keep his muscles toned.
